BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER BEFORE
Mon, 01/28/2019 - 13:20
The first fine food British trade show of the year in the UK, Scotland’s Speciality Food Show, saw the highest number of exhibitors for a decade and with orders taken and new relationships being forged, it heralded a confident start to the new season.
With 175 speciality food and drink producers showcasing their products to the many farm shops, delis, hotels, tourist outlets, cafes and restaurants, there was plenty to see, taste and enjoy at this highly successful Show, which is run in conjunction with Scotland’s Trade Fair.
2018 witnessed another busy tourist season which kept footfall moving in many of Scotland’s independent shops and food outlets and in particular, those serving overseas visitors. There is great confidence this will continue in 2019 despite domestic political upheavals and concern over the global economic outlook.
Sue Montgomery from Ardardan Farm Shop said: “The Scottish Speciality Food and Trade Fair is always a must do on our calendar and this year didn’t disappoint. It’s a great opportunity to see what’s new in the industry, blether with current suppliers and find a few new jewels to stock in our farm and gift shop.”
As well as buying and sourcing products, the Show increased its additional content this year with, among other events, the introduction of Nessie’s Den. Five new exhibitors pitched their products to three key buyers in a fun and entertaining session. In addition, Minister for Trade, Innovation and Investment Ivan Mckee MSP visited the Show and presented one of the Best Product Awards.
The Best Product Awards were a highlight of the Show with some very talented exhibitors winning, and a superb range of high quality, mostly Scottish products, taking the top awards. Linda Finlay from the Blair Drummond Smiddy, who judged the awards, said: “It is wonderful to see all the new Scottish products that are coming onto the market. I enjoyed trying many of them during judging and look forward to stocking them at The Smiddy. The selection of suppliers at the Show was good and offered a huge variety of products for all visitors. It is so important to have a show for Scotland, showcasing all our delicious foods and wonderful products.”
Seminars and workshops on a wide range of topics from social media to success secrets for retailers, were well attended and many commented on how useful these extra events are for retailers who often struggle with time to learn new tips.
Exhibitor James Maclardie from Cream O’Galloway Dairy Company said: “This has been an excellent Show for us and the icing on the cake is winning an award for our Bluebell cheese. We have formed many new relationships and are impressed by the quality of visitors attending.”
Show Director Mark Saunders said: “Scottish food and drink just keeps getting better and better. Every year we see new suppliers springing up which keeps the show fresh and interesting for the buyers. This show was no exception and buyers seemed to enjoy the variety and depth of product available, particularly from the regional food groups who supported at least 25 small unknown suppliers all seeking a toehold in the market.”
